1. Understanding Theta Brain Activity
Theta is a recognized pattern of neural oscillation, generally discussed in the 4–8 Hz range. Research has associated theta activity with several cognitive processes, including memory and learning, although its meaning depends strongly on context and how the activity is measured.
Research on theta does not support treating “Theta” as a single universal mental state that automatically produces a particular outcome.

3. Binaural Beats and Cognition
Binaural beats occur when slightly different tones are presented separately to each ear, creating a perceived rhythmic beat.
Research has investigated whether binaural beats can influence cognition, attention, memory, anxiety and other mental states.
A 2019 meta-analysis found an overall medium effect across the studies it examined, but later reviews have continued to report mixed findings, particularly for memory and attention.

4. Theta-Frequency Binaural Beats: What Recent Research Says
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examined randomized controlled trials involving theta binaural beats.
The review found some potentially promising findings, but also noted that the available evidence was not sufficiently consistent to quantify effects for some outcomes such as anxiety and cognition. The authors characterized the evidence as limited and called for additional research.
WHY IT IS RELEVANT
This is especially relevant because the VSL specifically emphasizes Theta.It provides a useful distinction between: Theta as a real and studied neural oscillation and: specific claims about using a particular audio program to produce a particular cognitive transformation. Those are not the same claim.
